Gateway to Hope: musings on mission and ministry in a metropolitan world

WELCOME

About Us

We must be about reaching people for Christ by cultivating, strengthening and multiplying transformational churches and leaders that will result in a city-wide movement here and in other cities around the world.

It all started with a smelly guy…You know the one. I knew he walked in the room before I saw him because his odor preceded him. We knew each other well enough that he opened his arms for a hug from his favorite reverend. I realized, as he walked away, that I had gotten some of him on me because now I smelled to. Of course, it would be much, much later before I realized that the point of ministry here in the city is a regular exchange of self…getting some on you. You get some of you on them, some of them on you and a little of Christ on us all. It is incarnation at its essence.

According to the New Testament, the world would describe the church by saying,” look how they love one another.” But if your church is anything like the community I find myself in South Florida, then it is filled with smelly people, people with issues. There are spiritual issues, physical issues, mental and emotional issues. Smelly guys, smelly girls, smelly church people and smelly unchurched ones as well.

Some of you may find this surprising but I liked living in Northeast Ohio. I like the weather (most of the time), I liked the people and the work that we all did together among the broken and hurting. Then I got a phone call. Would you be willing to move to Florida? I gotta’ be honest, I am not a big fan of temperatures north of 70. I may never see a beach unless we get visitors who want to go. Not really interested in sand and swamps don’t intrigue me. So why else would you move to this part of the world?

God

It was time to begin again, to start over, to operate on the same principles that Terri and I have learned, but take on a new environment, a new set of cultures, and geography. It was God and we both became convinced it was right.

How about you, how about the place God has you? Want to join us in this new adventure. We would love to have you whether that is electronically or in person come along. We are going to learn all over again, but one thing is for certain, there are going to be some smelly people involved. Think you’re ready?
